The Lubbock Animal Shelter recently experience troubles with animals under their care getting sick from an illness outbreak within the shelter. This caused them to close the shelter to the public, focusing on keeping as many dogs healthy as possible.

This closure meant no adoptions or intakes other than a few interactions with fosters to keep healthy animals safe and away from the illness. They lost less than 50 dogs during this time and did their best to limit how many animals got sick.

Now that things are back under control, they are reopening to the public on Tuesday, August 15, 2023, with some new restrictions.

In order to keep the animals safe, they are asking all visitors to wear shoe covers while in the adoption center. These covers will need to be changed between each room in order to avoid tracking anything from one group of dogs to another. There will also be no physical interaction with any puppies in order to keep them as safe as possible. You will also not be able to interact with dogs from different rooms but can interact with dogs in the same room.

Their intakes will be limited to emergencies only for dogs, and by appointment only for cats. LAS is happy to be opening back up and finding homes for the animals under their care, they simply wish to keep everyone as safe and healthy as possible. So, please follow the guidelines they provide if you wish to adopt through them.

More information can be found in this Facebook post on the official LAS page.
