Lil Wayne Apologizes for Insulting Black Lives Matter Movement
Update: Lil Wayne told TMZ that he meant no offense with his Black Lives Matter remarks to ABC, and said questions about his daughter made him feel provoked.
"When the reporter began asking me questions about my daughter being labeled a b---and a hoe, I got agitated. From there, there was no thought put into her questions and my responses," the "No Mercy" rapper told the site.
He also offered the sort-of mea culpa, "Apologies to anyone who was offended."
While Lil Wayne's stance on racism -- namely, that it no longer exists in the United States based solely on anecdotal evidence -- has been widely documented at this point, the rapper took things a step further when he cut a recent interview short after insulting the Black Lives Matter movement.
Reporter Linsey Davis sat down with Lil Wayne for ABC's Nightline yesterday (November 1) and asked the rapper to expand on the controversial comments he made during a September interview for Undisputed regarding a discussion about race and police brutality. At the time, the Tha Carter III rapper said he had “never…dealt with racism,” though he also noted his views were based on his own personal experiences.
But when asked by Davis whether he’d since changed his mind, Lil Wayne answered, “Not at all."
Then, when asked what the “Lollipop” rapper’s thoughts were on the Black Lives Matter movement, he appeared to be unaware of it as a whole and went on to dismiss it entirely.
"That just sounds weird, I don’t know, that you put a name on it,” he said. "It’s not a name, it’s not ‘whatever, whatever,’ it’s somebody got shot by a policeman for a f---ked up reason.
"I am a young, black, rich motherf---ker,” he continued. “If that don’t let you know that America understand black motherf---kers matter these days, I don’t know what it is...I don’t know what you mean, man, don’t come at me with that dumb ass sh---t," he said. "My life matters."
Lil Wayne continued, saying he feels no connection to the movement.
“I don’t feel connected to a damn thing that ain’t got nothin’ to do with me," he said. "If you do, you crazy as sh---t. Not the camera, you. Feeling connected to something that ain’t got nothin’ to do with you? If it ain’t got nothin’ to do with me, I ain’t connected to it.”
ABC reports Lil Wayne cut the interview short soon after. Watch the segment above.
