Hell's Gates

The far east end of Mackenzie Park is where you will find Hell's Gates. It sits just outside the rear gates to Lubbock Cemetery. Many people will tell you that the Park and cemetery is haunted by ghosts and abandoned spirits.

I was told that the Native Americans placed a curse on the land back in 1877 as human sacrifice was not uncommon for them. The double scalped ghost of Marshall Sewell haunts the spot where he died or is buried in an unmarked grave.

Marshall Sewell's tortured soul is often reported covered with blood and moaning in pain. As the legend goes, Swell's ghost would shoot at you and wrestle you to the ground while trying to steal your scalp to replace the one he lost.

Others will tell you that it was a commonplace to hang outlaws or cattle thieves. This two-post gate was the last thing they saw before being led to the tree where they would die. Some tell tales of a tall gallows that once stood on the spot, of a red haired Confederate Army General on the prowl and of course the strange tale of two wealthy brothers murdered off Highway 287 who are said to haunt the spot because this is where their bodies were buried in an unmarked grave.

Pioneer Hotel

Lubbock, Texas, 1958. The town was already stirred up after the unexplained disappearance of two Lubbockites in 1957. It was January 16, 1958, when a visiting couple from Nebraska came to stay at the then brand-new Pioneer Hotel. The Nebraska couple had spent the day touring Lubbock. That night, while they were asleep in their room on the 4th floor, a stranger sneaked in to their room, tied their necks to the bed and hanged the couple outside of their hotel room. No one saw anyone enter the or leave the room and no one heard any noise coming from that room. After weeks of investigation, the police found no evidence of who could have committed the murder and found no sign of how the killer got into the room.

Weeks later, a man traveling from California stayed at the hotel for the night. He was just passing through as well when his car got a flat tire. He took the car to the first shop he found and ended up spending the night. The closest hotel and with the cheapest room? Yeppers - the Pioneer. Just by luck he ended up on the 4th floor and had no idea of the history of the room. According to the police report, it wasn't a very peaceful night. A grizzly and terrifying murder took place that night and as before no evidence or suspect.

Legend has it there was one more murder in the hotel in the same room on the 4th floor. The investigation ended the same - no evidence or suspect of any kind. So the hotel was closed. This is not the end of the story. In the late 70's there was a total of 3 deaths in the hotel. All of the victims were high school kids looking to have fun in the "haunted" hotel.

One kid was found on the stairs, almost all of his bones were broken and looked as if he had been pushed down the stairs. A girl was found there three months later with the same broken body and no explanation. The third young man overdosed in the room on the 4th floor.
