The Greatest Animated Movie Ever, ‘Heavy Metal’,’ Is Coming to Theaters Again [VIDEO]
This Friday (March 2) is a chance to see the greatest animated "adult" movie ever made on a big theater screen again. Heavy Metal returns for one showing only at Lubbock's Alamo Drafthouse.
Animated movies have always been mostly kids films and Disney stuff until the 70s and 80s. That's when titles like Fritz the Cat and Wizards started to hit theaters. And long before the days of the VCR or DVR, you actually had to go to a theater to see any movie.
Many of them weren't very welcome in smaller, more conservative towns like Lubbock. And thus was born the "Midnight Movie." This is where the counter culture could catch cult flicks like Heavy Metal, which returns to the theater for the first time in decades.
With a cast of stars like John Candy and Harold Ramis (before they were real stars) and a soundtrack from rock's biggest names like Sammy Hagar, Don Felder, Cheap Trick, Journey and more, Heavy Metal became an instant cult classic as popular as The Rocky Horror Picture Show.
I've seen the movie once in a theater back when the mall theater was facing Slide Road and many times on video. Now, it's time to catch it on the big screen again this Friday at 10 p.m. at the Lubbock's Alamo Drafthouse.
I'm almost positive this will sell out, so grab tickets fast before you miss it and have to wait decades more for it to come around again.
