Lubbock TBT: ESPN Game Day Tech-Texas 2008

We all like to remember the good times.  And with social media marketing, #tbt aka "Throwback Thursday" is always a great time to post that middle school picture or that one time you took a picture with a celebrity. Today, we revisit the historic ESPN Game Day telecast from Lubbock on November 1, 2008.

Leading up to the broadcast, the Texas Tech website hyped up their 2008 meeting with Texas...

"Saturday's game marks the highest combined rankings of Tech and an opponent to play at Jones AT&T Stadium. Both teams are 8-0 overall and 4-0 in Big 12 Conference play. Texas Tech defeated No. 18 Kansas, 63-21, in Lawrence on Saturday, while Texas knocked off No. 8 Oklahoma State, 28-24, in Austin."

Then they followed with the announcement...

"ESPN College Gameday built by The Home Depot is heading to Lubbock and will broadcast Saturday from the Texas Tech campus, ESPN officials confirmed Sunday morning. Hosts Chris Fowler, Kirk Herbstreit, Lee Corso and Desmond Howard will anchor the show, which will air prior to Texas Tech's showdown with in-state rival No. 1 Texas.

"We are fortunate to host ESPN College Gameday this weekend," Texas Tech Director of Athletics Gerald Myers said. "This is not only great for the athletics department, but also a tremendous opportunity to showcase our university, the city of Lubbock and our outstanding students, fans and citizens."

So, the table was set... but what famous Lubbock celebrities would should up for the broadcast? Well, it was mostly the ESPN core four.  However, legendary Basketball Bobby Knight (coaching for Tech at the time) was hilarious. He told the crew they were dressed for a funeral as he passed out Texas Tech gear for them to wear.  Knight along with Lee Corso, expressed their enthusiasm for a Tech win.  I'm guessing they both were happy with the result.

As for the game, we all know the legendary finish, but ESPN wrapped it nicely...

"For one night, Lubbock, Texas, was the center of the college football universe.

It was Nov. 1, 2008, and it was a game that featured two prominent head coaches, six future head coaches, multiple future NFL players, three field stormings and one of the generation's most memorable game-winning touchdowns as Michael Crabtree strutted into the end zone to help No. 7 Texas Tech topple No. 1 Texas 39-33."

But I really don't have to remind you about that...
