Lubbock's Ranch House Restaurant (1520 Buddy Holly Ave.) has reopened after literally being closed for years.

It must be Christmas in July, because this is a Hallmark Channel level miracle for me and anyone else who has been hungover on Saturday morning and in desperate need of filling, delicious and inexpensive food.

One of my favorite things about Ranch House was how out-of-time it felt. Everything felt like the rural south 30+ years ago. It reminded me of visiting my grandparents in eastern Oklahoma. Many of my friends and I bonded there. We talked about family from small towns, and remembered childhoods spent running around causing chaos throughout neighborhoods. Well, not everyone was "that kid," but I was.

It appears that the Ranch House has modernized their menu quite a bit, but many old favorites are still there, and the price point is still very inexpensive. And they still have their old school hours of 7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

I hope they have the same type of waitresses: the archetypal, compassionate mother type, saintly referring to you as "honey" or "dear" while you stuff down your poor choices from the previous night with a generous amount of cream gravy and a steadily refilled cornucopia of strong black coffee.

Of course, you don't have to be hungover to eat there; I'm sure it's wonderful anytime. But for me, it was always the antidote to a rough night, so to speak. It was a delightful ritual, and I was so sad to see it go the first time. I feel like a friend has risen from the dead.

Best of luck, Ranch House. I absolutely believe in your magic.
