TTU Health Sciences Center School of Medicine International Medicine Club Will Host It’s 3rd Annual Poverty Banquet

The Texas Tech University Health Sciences Center School of Medicine International Medicine Club will host its third annual Poverty Banquet to raise awareness and provide education about the critical issue of poverty in Lubbock and around the world.

According to the U.S. Food and Agriculture Organization, 925 million people worldwide are malnourished — more than the populations of the U.S., Canada and Europe combined. In 2009, 43.6 million people in America were in poverty, according to the U.S. Census Bureau.

The Poverty Banquet will address themes regarding global poverty and feature speakers including the CEO of Breedlove Foods Inc., a nonprofit organization in Lubbock that has provided food to the hungry locally and globally since the early ‘90s. Willa Finley will also share her expertise in international agriculture.

Proceeds from the event benefit Breedlove Foods Inc., whose vision is to transform lives through hope and encouragement. Over the past two years, the banquet has donated the equivalent of more than 60,000 meals to those in need through donations and ticket sales.

The International Medicine Club promotes the health of a global community, which reflects the overall goals of students, faculty and staff.

The event will be held at the International Cultural Center Hall of Nations, 601 Indiana Ave. 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday (April 19).
