What Does a Pop Radio DJ Think About the New Ghost Album, ‘Prequelle’?
Most of you know me as the happy-go-lucky pop DJ on 102.5 KISS FM. But pop music is not all I listen to. I've listened to it all -- from oldies to country to Tejano and just about everything in between.
However, Doom Metal is something that I don't regularly listen to.
I was familiar with Ghost prior to the release of their latest album Prequelle, but I wouldn't consider them a band I would listen to on a regular basis.
That is until I heard Prequelle in its entirety. And I have FMX deejay Wes Nessman to thank for that.
A large number of songs on the album reminded me of hard rock of the early 1980s, which is not a bad thing. I think of it as a re-imagining of that particular sound.
To say this is a fun album is an understatement to say the least.
"Rats" was the first single released, and quite a good one at that. Pitchfork described it as:
“Rats” and “Witch Image” get their strength from smoldering licks and stacked harmonies plucked from the Ozzy Osbourne playbook, providing metalheads with a welcome break from all the mid-tempo durdling.
Though a lot of people seemed to dislike "Pro Memoria" due to its repeating chorus, I can say that I enjoyed it because it has a loud message with soothing music -- something you don't see a lot of in today's music.
It may be, at first, difficult to swallow the slow and pseudo-calm songs, but having the concept of the album in mind makes perfect sense. Death and Survival, Medieval ages. It fits perfectly.
Who said a pop DJ can't enjoy some rock every now and then!
