Multi-Vehicle Crash Injures Four People in Lubbock, Including Police Officer [UPDATED]

Updated 5/8/19 7:30 p.m.: The Lubbock Police Department has released new information about what led up to the multi-vehicle crash Wednesday afternoon.

According to LPD, a police officer was responding to a domestic assault. The officer was using his truck's lights and sirens. After stopping at a red light at the intersection on 50th Street to alert drivers, the officer proceeded when eastbound and westbound traffic yielded.

However, police say a pickup truck traveling westbound in the far right lane hit the officer's vehicle. The collision between the two vehicles sent the LPD truck into an SUV stopped on University Ave., which was then pushed into a school bus stopped in a lane next to it.

Updated: 5/8/19 7:24 p.m.: LPD Public Information Officer Tiffany Pelt has confirmed that all lanes of University Avenue are open again.

According to Pelt, the four-vehicle crash that happened around 3:45 p.m. involved an LPD pickup truck, a civilian pickup truck, an SUV and a school bus.

The police officer suffered moderate injuries and was transported to the hospital. Three other people suffered minor injuries. Six students on the school bus were uninjured.

Original story: According to an LBK alert sent out around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday afternoon, all lanes of University Avenue between 50th and 52nd Street are shut down due to a major crash.

The closure could potentially last for several hours, and drivers are encouraged to find alternate routes.

So far it is unknown if there were any injuries in the crash.
