Photogs, Witches, and Astrologers Unite: Buck Moon this Weekend
This weekend is a special one for those that love the moon, because we will have a ‘buck moon’ reaching peak illumination on Sunday morning.
What is a ‘buck moon’?
The full moon in July has been given the special name of ‘buck moon’ for a rather self-explanatory reason. The Old Farmer’s Almanac states that Native American tribes began calling the July full moon the ‘buck moon’ due to that being the time when male deer, aka ‘bucks’, grow their new antlers.

There are also other indigenous names given to the July full moon including the feather molting moon, and the salmon moon, which indicated when fish returned to the area and were ready to be caught. NASA also stated that Europeans would call this full moon the hay moon for the haymaking in June and July, or mead moon due to mead being created by fermenting honey mixed with water, sometimes adding fruits, spices, grains or hops that were ready to harvest in the summer months.
Why else should we care about this full moon?
If the name of the moon isn’t interesting to you, then maybe there are some other things you’d be interested in. For example, photographers will be excited to take some beautiful photos of the full moon.
If you are into astrology, then you would like to know that this full moon is in Capricorn, meaning that this is a great time to take a step back, look at the legacies you are building, and potentially pivot to focus on things that bring you happiness and connection to assist in overcoming hurdles.
If you are into witchy practices, the full moon is a great time to recharge crystals, manifest your dreams, and focus on taking in the power of the full moon. Due to Capricorn’s placement as an earth sign, and these sign’s control over money, this can be a great time to manifest prosperity for you and your loved ones.
