Pedestrian Deaths in Lubbock Increased by 80 Percent from 2020 to 2021
According to data presented by Lubbock Police Department Chief Floyd Mitchell during a city council meeting on Tuesday, February 8th, there was an increase of over 80 percent in pedestrian deaths when it came to deadly crashes in 2021.
Specifically, in 2020 there were six documented pedestrian deaths, whereas in 2021 there were 11. The total number of pedestrian-involved crashes, however, went down from 85 to 77.
In total, there were 47 fatalities as the result of crashes in 2021, also an over 80 percent increase when compared to 2020's 26 fatalities. Since 2019, there have been a bit over 25,000 crashes within Lubbock city limits. Of those, 294 involved pedestrians.
KAMC News reports that of all the 11 pedestrian fatalities in 2021, none of them involved either a passenger or driver dying.
Only being a month into 2022, Lubbock is shaping up to continue the trend set the year prior when it comes to pedestrian fatalities. So far, two pedestrians have died in Lubbock County, but it was noted that they happened outside of city limits. The two deaths were also the result of the same incident.
Here's some additional information concerning crash fatalities in previous years:
- Data from 2020 showed that of the 26 fatalities that resulted from crashes, six involved the death of a pedestrian
- LPD showed that 51 fatalities occurred from 48 crashes in 2019. Of the fatal crashes, 12 involved the death of a pedestrian
- Of the 132 pedestrian-involved crashes in 2019, a little more than 9 percent resulted in the death of the pedestrian
