Lubbock’s Going to Get Really Weird In September of 2022
When I was a young man in the late '90s into the early '00s, Weird Al was the man. That wasn't even when Weird Al was most popular, but this awkward middle school kid loved those parodies.
I would hear Madonna or Coolio and think of the Weird Al songs. To this day, 20+ years later, if American Pie by Don McLean comes on I don't sing Don's Lyrics. I bust right into:
A long long time ago
In a galaxy far away
Naboo was under an attack
And I thought me and Qui-Gon Jinn
Could talk the Federation into
Maybe cutting them a little slack
But their response, it didn't thrill us
They locked the doors and tried to kill us
We escaped from that gas
Then met Jar Jar and Boss Nass
We took a bongo from the scene
And we went to Theed to see the queen
We all wound up on Tatooine
That's where we found this boy
Sorry, I can't just sing one line.
Anyways, I love Weird Al and I've always regretted not getting to go to his concert when he came to Lubbock back on October 8th, 2000. (I think that's when it was) The good news is that I can finally rectify that major missing milestone in my life because "Weird Al" Yankovic is coming back to Lubbock for The Unfortunate Return of the Ridiculously Self-Indulgent, Ill-Advised Vanity Tour with Special Guest: Emo Philips.
Weird Al will grace Lubbock with his presence at The Buddy Holly Hall of Performing Arts and Sciences on September 29, 2022, at 7:30 p.m.
Emo Philips is a standup comedian who's produced specials on HBO and has performed more than 7000 shows across the world. You might remember Philips as the carpenter in the film UHF who shows Al how to "properly" use a table saw.
This tour from Al will be a bit different from most tours, like he's different from most artists, in that Weird Al promises to deliver a different setlist every night, so no two shows on the tour will be the same. The concert also won't focus on his famous parody material, but instead the more obscure original songs that die-hard Yankovic fans love even more than the classics.
