Sunday, October 29th from noon - 3 p.m. Los Hermanos Famila will host their 6th West Texas Latino Art Show & Annual Día de Los Muertos Celebración at the Lubbock Civic Center. As per their website:
The event will showcase the work of Latino artist, offer a cultural experience through local performers – traditional and modern; hold a unique Día de Los Muertos cake decorating contest; offer products from participating vendors; as well as provide children’s activities that offer cultural understanding.
Los Hermanos Familia is still accepting applications for vendors, artists, cake applicants, altar displays, performers and entries to the car show. You can access those applications here.
Día de Los Muertos is a traditional holiday in Mexican and Central/South American culture dating back as far as 3000 years. The departed are honored with food, drink, photos and other objects. The tone is usually joyous and bright- a refreshing alternative from what many people consider the required fear and anxiety associated with death.
I have been blessed to be invited to celebrations in the past, the memories of which I will treasure always. The artistry is incredible to behold and the strong bond of community is an absolute pleasure to witness.
