Lauryn Hill was sentenced to three months in federal prison yesterday for tax evasion. After that 90 days, she'll spend another three months under house arrest. Lauryn was accused of failing to pay taxes on more than $2 million in earnings over several years. She could have gotten up to three years behind bars.

Before her sentencing, Lauryn tried to put the blame for her tax woes on slavery. She said, quote,

"I was put into a system I didn't know the nature of I'm a child of former slaves. I got into an economic paradigm and had that imposed on me. I sold 50 million units now I'm up here paying a tax debt. If that's not likened to slavery, I don't know what is."

The judge wasn't buying it. He also wasn't impressed that Lauryn paid off almost $1 million of tax debt before yesterday's hearing. He said, quote, "She wasn't interested in all those years in paying what she owed."

The only good news from all of this is that Layryn will be back in the studio where she belongs.
