Lubbock, here’s something sweet to put on your calendar—the Science Spectrum’s second annual Honey Bee Day is happening Saturday, August 16th, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. right on the main floor of the museum. It’s all part of the celebration for National Honey Bee Day, and yes, there will be real live bees…in a safe and educational way, of course.

Get Up Close and Personal with Lubbock, Texas, Beekeeper Professionals

The Caprock Beekeepers Association will be on hand with portable hives, giving you a rare chance to get up close with these incredible pollinators without suiting up in one of those big, puffy white bee suits. You’ll learn why bees are absolutely essential—not just for honey—but for just about everything that grows and blooms here in West Texas.

And it’s not just about looking—there’s plenty to do. The Science Spectrum Education Department will be showing kids (and adults) how pollination works, plus you can get sticky in the best way possible by making Honey Slime. The Lubbock Children’s Museum will have bee-themed craft stations, the FabLab will help you create your own “bee buddy,” and you can even meet some of the Science Spectrum’s resident invertebrates—a.k.a. the other creepy-crawlies that share the insect spotlight.

Enjoy Honey Bee Day Activities in Lubbock

The best part? All the Honey Bee Day activities are included with regular museum admission. That means you can enjoy the bee fun, then head downstairs to check out the Science Spectrum’s aquariums and other live animal displays.

Honey Bee Day isn’t just a fun outing—it’s also a chance to learn why pollinator populations are struggling, and what you can do to help. From planting bee-friendly flowers to supporting local honey producers, small changes can make a big difference.

So, whether you’re a budding beekeeper, a science nerd, or you just love an excuse to eat more honey, this is a buzz-worthy event you won't BEElieve!
