It's one of the great traditions at Texas Tech University and in Lubbock. The Carol of Lights brings students, alumni, and the Lubbock community together every year to sing Christmas carols and see the campus light up with Christmas lights.

But sadly, like many other events in 2020, the 62nd Annual Carol of Lights will not be an in-person event.

This week the University Student Housing website announced that Carol of Lights would be a virtual event that will take place on Tuesday, December 1st. The virtual lighting celebration will be live streamed beginning at 6:30 p.m. and everyone can watch on the live stream found here.

Texas Tech says that the decision to make the Carol of Lights ceremony a virtual event was to "support our efforts as a university and Lubbock community to follow COVID-19 protocols". The City of Lubbock has continues to see a rising number of cases and so has Texas Tech. On Tuesday, the City of Lubbock reported 333 new cases of coronavirus while Texas Tech reported 79 new cases as of November 9.

According to the Texas Tech website, much of the ceremony will be a compilation of ceremony's over the last five years called the "best of Carol of Lights" with some "2020 touches" added in.

While there will be no in-person events this year for Carol of Lights, everyone can still drive through the campus and take pictures as "The Matador Lights" will be on from December 1st through January 3, 2021.

Texas Tech is planning for the 63rd Annual Carol of Lights to be an in-person event on Tuesday November 30, 2021. You can find more information about this year's virtual Carol of Lights here.
