Personal admission here: I really liked Chris Beard when he was at Texas Tech. Frankly, I still like Chris Beard.

Sure, call him a traitor because of where he went and how he left, but he was really likable in Lubbock and he's one of the best in the world at what he does. Don't get me wrong, I hope he has little to no success at Texas, but I can't help but chuckle at his one-liners in press conferences or his fireside chats.

That being said, I'm a little conflicted on how I view this new video that surfaced of him on Twitter this morning. Obviously, Beard is back in Lubbock with his Longhorns tonight for a huge Big 12 contest, but the video in question is from when Beard was still a coach for the Red Raiders.

A little backstory before we get to the video.

Jody, the man who posted the video, had a small basketball with a fake Chris Beard signature on it that was going to be given to a two year old. The kid couldn't read and nobody thought the signature was real. Jody ran into Beard and had the ball on him so he tried to get it signed for real.

Beard did not sign the ball and instead recorded this message for Jody's dad, the forger, instead:

You can read the full story on Twitter, but the recap gives the gist.

As far as the video goes, before April 1st, 2021, I would have laughed at this video. It's Chris Beard's schtick. He busted assistant coaches, managers, and players for five years about this truth-telling mantra that his teams have. He built a lot of goodwill up in Lubbock for five seasons telling everyone how honest he was, then he lied to Kirby Hocutt and took a job at the University of Texas.

That kind of takes the wind out of the sails of truth, doesn't it?

The video is still funny as Chris Beard slurs through his prepared lines about pillars of the program, but why couldn't he sign the ball? I don't get that. Why take the time to make the video, but not sign the ball? I'm not one to bag on celebrities or public figures to turn down autographs, but he took five minutes to hear the story and make the video. He didn't have 15 more seconds to sign the ball?

Here's the real kicker. The previous Christmas, Jody got a book signed for his father, Bruce, but Beard signed it over to Bryce. It's the little things.

Anyway… Wreck Em.
