File this one under Least Surprising News of All Time: according to producer Simon Kinberg, the upcoming sequel to the box office smash Deadpool will poke fun at superhero sequels. No word yet on whether the character of Deadpool will also make references to other movies, talk to the camera, and poke fun at the bad reviews of the 20th Century Fox’s X-Men franchise.

In a recent conversation with /Film, Kinberg shared some insight into the next Deadpool movie and what the next step is once you’ve already skewered the superhero genre as a whole.

I think Deadpool 2 will comment on anything that’s happening in movies today especially in superhero movies. The sort of glut or saturation of these movies and the proliferation of sequels is definitely something we’ll play around with.

What kind of jokes could we expect to see in Deadpool 2 Let’s take a stab at it. The big trend in 2016 was internal conflict among superheroes, with Iron Man and Captain America throwing down in Captain America: Civil War and Batman and Superman coming to blows in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. So let’s assume that Deadpool will spend most of the movie fighting against his so-called allies. Another big point of criticism this year was the need to introduce characters in another franchise movie rather than letting them hit the ground running in their own (think Spider-Man and Wonder Woman), so let’s drop in some major characters from the Deadpool universe only to ditch them immediately. Would they dare do that with Cable?

As more of a general trend, though, there are plenty of jokes Deadpool 2 could make about sequels. As much as I loved Morena Baccarin in the first film, it would be worth it to ditch her character entirely if meant having Weasel chide Deadpool for immediately forgetting the woman he just risked life and limb to protect (see: almost every single action movie sequel prior to Christopher Nolan’s work on Batman). There is also plenty of room for Deadpool 2 to go the Batman Returns route and get super weird and awfully dark; Danny DeVito as the primary villain, anyone? Whatever they choose to do, here’s hoping 20th Century Fox gives the team the same wide degree of latitude we saw in Deadpool. Someone needs to be making fun of all these superhero movies that keep driving us crazy.

While no Deadpool 2 release date has been set, the hot rumor is at some point in 2018, so be sure to keep that entire year wide open, just in case.
