Carrie Fisher Weighs in on Why Han and Leia Split Up Prior to ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
Any Star Wars fan knows that nobody speaks as bluntly about the franchise as Carrie Fisher. While Harrison Ford and Mark Hamill might be counted on for the occasional funny soundbite or bit of interesting backstory, if you really want one of the Star Wars actors to lay their chips on the table, it’s Carrie Fisher you need to listen to. The actress and writer possesses one of the most acerbic wits in all of Hollywood and has never shied away from trying to spin her sense of humor into backdoor Star Wars cannon.
This past weekend, as part of the Saskatoon Comic & Entertainer Expo (via Collider), Fisher was asked to give her thoughts on why the marriage between Han Solo and Leia Organa did not survive the gap between Return of the Jedi and Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Unsurprisingly, Fisher showed her signature sense of humor in her response.
He smuggled way too much. And girls, I know you don’t want your husband smuggling, do you? Hanging out with the hairy guy too often. I think there are a lot of problems with that. He wouldn’t take me on that hyperspace thing enough. [pause] Euphemism.
Sure, Fisher was trying to be funny with her comments, but doesn’t this feel like it’s more truth than not? There doesn’t need to be any grand dramatic reason why relationships fail; sometimes people who love each other are just pulled in two different directions and things don’t work out. There’s probably a positive message in Star Wars: The Force Awakens for kids who grew up in a family with separated parents, and reinforcing the idea that two adults can be apart and still care deeply for their kids is a nice message for the next generation of Star Wars fans to have in mind.
Of course, maybe I’m just overthinking it and I should just appreciate an excellent joke from a very funny woman. Either way, I am definitely looking forward to seeing more of Carrie Fisher in Star Wars: Episode 8 than we saw in the last film.
