It’s almost time to head back to school which means you’re probably looking for a place to live this fall! Here are some key components to remember when you’re looking for an apartment or home:

Location. Location is everything. Where will you be the most? That’s what you want to be closest to! If you’re a student – shop close to campus! Find a house or a complex that is closest to your favorite hangouts such as bars and restaurants.

Rates. Yes rates are important but know what you’re paying for! Sure it would be nice to only pay $150 a month but are you going to be living in an efficiency the size of your bedroom closet at your parents house? No thank you! Check and see what the bills are like also! Talk to other tenants in the complex or previous tenants in the house to get the best idea of how much you will really be spending every month!

Space. Space is ideal for everyone in an apartment or a home. Make sure you get enough especially if you’re living with roommates. You need personal space and space to store your things! That bedroom may look big enough when it’s empty but what about when you get all your furniture in? If apartment living is too small and you’re not ready for a house, think about upgrading to a cottage style community.

Parking. Parking can sometimes be an issue in an apartment community. Shop around for a place that has not only plenty of parking but plenty available right outside your building! If you’re considering a house, check to see if you have enough room in the driveway for any additional roommates.  Also look into the commute to work or campus. If the Citibus shuttle is available you may be able to save dollars on campus parking and gas to work!

Amenities. Find out what the house or complex have to offer! Ask yourself: Will you have a balcony? Do you have a yard or grassy area to hang out? A grill? What about a pool for the warm Lubbock weekends? Tour the entire property before making your decision. And weigh your options against a house that may not offer all that an apartment complex can!
