Lubbock's Awesome Adoptable Pet of the Week is Jake, who is described by the Lubbock Animal Adoption Center (3323 SE Loop 289) as "really a sweet baby." He's also a good baby who knows how to sit and shake.

This photo of Jake breaks my heart because he looks a little defeated. He has been at the shelter for 44 days. But here's the thing: dogs don't give up. He may look a little forlorn now, but I know with the love of his new family he will thrive.

Why hasn't he been adopted yet? There's certainly nothing wrong with him, but it is harder to home large dogs and dogs that a landlord might classify as a pit bull. Reminder: pit bull is not a breed of dogs, but rather a description for any dog that has those types of characteristics, like the broad shoulders and short face:

In fact, "pit bull" isn't a breed, but a term used to describe the American Pit Bull Terrier, the Bull Terrier, the American Staffordshire Terrier, and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier.

I find this guy to absolutely adorable with his moo-cow size and pattern. Every rescue I've ever had has been intensely loyal, healthy and has captured my heart.

Here's my baby Mucky, who I found at about six months in a pawn store parking lot:

I think if Jake is part cow, Mucky is part goat.

Jake is still a young guy at about two years old. That's the perfect age if you ask me --old enough to be past puppy naughtiness, but young enough to get many years together. He is up to date on all shots, fixed and microchipped.

You can meet him at the Lubbock Animal Adoption Center, open every day but Sunday.
