Now that spring has hit Lubbock, we know that tornado season is upon us.

While spring is lovely for its warmer weather, blooming plants, and occasional rain, the change from cold to hot weather in West Texas is a recipe for tornados.

Sure, a serious tornado hasn’t hit Lubbock since the 70s, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t still watch out for them. You never know when a funnel might form and touch down near your home.

Thankfully, there are ways you can prepare yourself for a tornado to ensure the best chance of staying safe for you and your family.

What to Do:

One of the first things to do if find the safest place in your house for shelter. This can be a basement, bathroom, closet, or any other windowless room that is toward the middle of your home or underground.

One you’ve established a safe spot, you should have an emergency kit prepared with any necessities for you family.

This includes water, non-perishable food, flashlights, first aid kit, dog food, diapers, a bucket, toilet paper, paper towels, blankets, and anything else you may need.

Have all of these supplies on hand to easily grab and take you your safe spot, or better yet, stored in that location for ease of use.

Ensure that your whole family understands what to do if there is a tornado to avoid any unnecessary chaos in the moment, and be sure to keep an eye out for any tornado watch or warning alerts.
