Why Did One of the Last Used Book Stores in Lubbock Close Its Doors?
Hester Books, which may possibly be the last used book store in town, has closed its doors after almost two decades.
According to Yelp, the store is only temporarily closed. It looks like they are working to reopen under new management according to another news report. The sign on the door at Hester Books said that they had closed December 31st, 2016. They are attempting to sell the store and expect news by spring.
There are no other used book stores with a working phone number in Lubbock except for Star Books and Comics downtown. Star Comics told me that they didn't know of any used book stores in town other than Hester's and they didn't seem to be aware that Hester's had closed. They added that they don't carry used novels, mostly comic books.
While it may seem that there's no market for used books anymore, I don't believe that's true. Other cities still have used bookstores. I moved here from Tucson last year, and Bookman's used books has several locations.there.
We will keep an eye on Hester Books and hope that they will re-open soon.
