The TikTok ‘Devious Lick’ Trend is the Dumbest One Yet
I’m starting to think the movie Idiocracy was prophecy rather than pure entertainment. Certainly, I’m not the only one who has made that observation.
Look at internet challenges, for instance. While there are those that support a good cause such as the “Ice Bucket Challenge” that was all the rage a few years ago, most of them are just pretty damn dumb. And I’m convinced this new “Devious Lick” challenge is the dumbest of the dumb.
Look, I was a pretty wild young man and I understand what it’s like to have a devious streak. But I was also smart enough to know that if I was going to do something that could potentially get me in trouble, it would probably not be best to broadcast it to the entire world.
That’s the thing with this “Devious Lick” challenge. Students are stealing random objects from schools such as toilet paper dispensers and hand sanitizer dispensers and then posting videos bragging about what they did on TikTok.
Of course, the main goal of the challenge is to get a whole bunch of views and soak in your 15 seconds of internet fame. But then what?
As you might imagine, school districts across the country aren’t fooling around with kids who choose to vandalize their schools. One school official got on the intercom and announced that any student taking part in the challenge would be arrested and disciplined to the fullest extent.
TikTok has yet to make a statement regarding the challenge, but I’ll bet a dollar to a donut that a ban is on the horizon.
