The Lubbock Bad Driver Saga Continues: Fog Edition

This morning was particularly foggy, which lead to a classic case of weather amnesia, where most drives seem to forget how to function.

I don’t know if it is due to a lack of proper driver’s ed, or because drivers chose to ignore it, but everyone seems to forget how to drive in any type of weather that isn’t warm and dry. Whether it’s rain, snow, or in today’s case, fog, so many drivers don’t know how to behave.

I saw several cases of people breaking even the simplest of rules for driving in dense fog this morning.

You have your speeder, zooming ahead into low visibility fog without a care of what might be moving slower ahead of them. These speeders are then more likely to hit the people who decide they don’t need to turn their lights on. These no-light drivers are the ones that will swerve right in front of you, or sneak up on you because they have no taillights on to let you know how close they are. Then the no-light people are even harder to see because of the people with their high-beams on making the visibility even worse.

This combination leaves you with a hazardous mess, just waiting to cause an accident.

Just in case anyone needs a reminder on how to safely drive in fog, here is what you are supposed to do:

• Slow down
• Use your low beams or fog lights (this will turn your tail lights on too)
• Don’t use your high-beams
• Leave lots of space between you and other drivers
