The Texas Department of Transportation announced Tuesday morning that they will lower the speed limit on the Marsha Sharp Freeway from 65 mph to 55 mph later this week.

This change is to ensure the safety of drivers and workers while construction is taking place through the end of the year. Updated speed limit signs will be installed on Thursday.

Texas Department of Transportation Lubbock Area Engineer Michael Wittie said that since there are two major road projects so close to each other on the MSF, the speed limits going in and out of work zones made driving a certain speed unclear to drivers.

Wittie also stated that the adjusted speed limit will let drivers know exactly what speed to drive while also keeping the workers safe during construction.

The reduced speed limit will change the speed limit on the Marsha Sharp Freeway from Quaker Avenue to Alcove Avenue.

The construction projects are expected to be finished by the end of this year.
