A man from Lubbock was arrested and charged for an incident that occurred back in 2017.

According to the Idalou Police Department, the investigation first began on December 8th, 2017, when officers were called to the Idalou Middle School.

When officers arrived, they were told by school officials about a possible instance of a child being assaulted. According to one news report, the child had told a school counselor that an older man had assaulted him with a PVC pipe.

After investigating further, the man accused of assaulting the child was identified as 42-year-old Michael Gipson. Police say the child told them that Gipson had accused them of stealing $50 and, as punishment, had locked them in a shed and hit them with a PVC pipe.

Police said the child even described another incident in which they were choked out.

In light of the accusations, Child Protective Services was called, and Gipson was brought in for questioning by police. Idalou PD said that Gipson told them the child was "...aggressive and defensive" when the incident occurred. Gipson said he became upset and grabbed a PVC pipe that the child was holding and hit him on the shoulder with it as a form of discipline. The nature of Gipson’s relationship to the child was not explained in the report.

For reasons not fully explained, the investigation into the initial incident was not followed up with until July 2020, when Idalou PD said the case was revisited. It's reported that photos of the broken pipe used in the assault were not submitted into evidence during the initial investigation.

After revisiting the investigation, Idalou PD said that Gipson was located again, arrested, and charged with Causing Injury to a Child.

According to KCBD.com, the case has been forwarded to the Lubbock County District Attorney’s Office for review, and Gipson has been released from the Lubbock County Detention Center.
