This week, new DVD releases include Bruce Willis and his geriatric friends kicking butt, Diane Lane trying to lead a horse to win and (hopefully) the final chapter in a series of terror-inducing flicks. John Malkovich stars in two of this week’s new releases. The Secretariat, Red and Saw: The Final Chapter.

First, we’ll start with the light-hearted, based-on-a-true-story Disney movie, The Secretariat. Set in 1973, the movie stars Diane Lane, John Malkovich, and Dylan Walsh(from FX’s Nip/Tuck). Diane Lane’s character is fighting for an underdog racehorse, Secretariat, to win the Triple Crown. Roger Ebert gave the film four stars and called it, ‘one of the year’s best films.’

John Malkovich makes his second appearance this week in a different kind of thriller, Red. Along with Bruce Willis, Helen Mirren, and Morgan Freeman, Malkovich and his ‘Retired Extremely Dangerous’ costars band together for a last-ditch effort to save Willis from an assassin.  According to the Web site Rottentomatoes.com, 75 percent of movie-goers enjoyed this movie, while 61 percent of critics agreed.  Ann Hornaday from The Washington Post said, ‘The one-liners zing right along with the bullets…’

Saw: The Final Chapter is the seventh (and apparently last) installment of the Saw flicks. In the series-ender, a group of Jigsaw survivors gather to seek support, but they may not find what they were looking for. The thriller stars many a c-list actor like Sean Patrick Flanery, Betsy Russel and Tobin Bell.  According to the Web site Rottentomatoes.com, fifty percent of audiences liked this movie and only eleven percent of critics recommend it.

In my opinion, if you’re in the mood for a feel-good family movie, I would recommend ‘The Secretariat’. If you’re in the mood for A-list stars in shoot-em-up situations, go with ‘RED’. And, if you’re in the mood for no name actors in heart racing and ‘how did they think of that?’ situations, go with ‘Saw: The Final Chapter’.
