It is the time of the year that we all feel a little more and are willing to do a little more for those who are less fortunate than ourselves. Even here in Lubbock, Texas, despite charities and outreach programs, we have families without homes, without food and without the basics for school. Most of us are aware of "Tent City." And if you have been out in the Depot District lately, there is always someone waiting for you to get out of your car or leave a club who has a hand out.

For a couple in Tacoma, Washington, this new year has brought on a idea to solicit funds and donations. They spend their spare time searching thrift stores for used backpacks (a new one may give the needy something to sell) and the fill it with juice, food, clothing, scarfs, gloves and small hygiene items like a roll of toilet paper, toothbrush, toothpaste, razor and a bar of soap.

They foot the bill for all of this and pick up almost everything at local dollar stores and get clothing donations from friends and families. The packs go in the car, and when they are approached by or they see a person in need they just hand them a backpack and say "God Bless You."

Obviously the bigger cities have more people in need than the South Plains, but that is the reason that this would be a worthwhile endeavor for this community. Be it survival packs or school supply packs, I promise you that this simple idea could make a huge difference to our South Plains families.
