Matt Rhule Announced as New Head Coach of the Carolina Panthers

On Tuesday morning, the Carolina Panthers announced that they were making Baylor Bears head coach Matt Rhule their next head coach.

There had been rumors all over the NFL of Rhule being a possible fit for some of the NFL head coaching vacancies. Most notably, Rhule had been linked to the New York Giants job, and many believed he was the top candidate for the position.

The Panthers must have thought the same thing as they moved swiftly to get a deal done with Rhule. He was reportedly set to interview with the Giants on Tuesday.

Rhule's contract with the Panthers will be a seven-year, $60 million deal, with incentives that could raise the total amount to $70 million.

Rhule became the head coach at Temple in 2013 where he finished with a 2-10 record in his first season with the Owls. He had back to back 10 win seasons for the Owls in 2015 & 2016 before leaving for the Baylor Bears after the 2016 season. Rhule leaves the college landscape with a 47-43 record.

At Baylor, Rhule saw constant improvement each year he was there. He finished 1-11 his first season for the Bears, then finished 7-6 with a Texas Bowl victory, then last season he took the Bears to an 11-3 record with a loss in the Sugar Bowl to the Georgia Bulldogs.
