A cashier at a Lubbock Market Street store tested positive for the novel coronavirus (COVID-19), the City of Lubbock confirmed Monday afternoon (April 6th).

The employee at the Market Street at 4425 19th Street worked just one day last week, April 2nd, 2020 from 10 a.m. to 4:15 p.m., according to The City. The employee wasn't exhibiting symptoms during their shift.

The City of Lubbock Health Department said the confirmed COVID-19 case poses no risk to the public, and is categorizing the store's exposure to the coronavirus as "low risk," due in large part to the "enhanced cleaning and sanitizing/disinfecting processes" adopted by The United Family.

To adhere to CDC guidelines, the City of Lubbock said some members of the store's team will self-quarantine, where they could collect up to 14 days of quarantine pay.

The store will remain open, albeit with some new protocols in place, according to Nancy Sharp, United Supermarkets Communications and Community Outreach Manager.

"This Market Street location will remain open, and we will continue to follow an enhanced cleaning, sanitizing/disinfecting process in every department. We have reaffirmed with all team members to sanitize check stands every 30 minutes, and to wash their hands at least every hour," Sharp said, adding: "Beginning this week, team members will be asked to complete a COVID-19 self-assessment protocol prior to clocking in. We have also reminded team members that if they develop a fever and symptoms of respiratory illness, such as a cough or shortness of breath, to stay home and call their healthcare provider right away."

United Supermarkets previously placed new sanitization and social distancing protocols into place in all stores operating under their company's umbrella, including: constant sanitization of shopping carts, door handles, credit/debit card pin pads; sanitization of check stands every 30 minutes; hourly hand washing of all employees; courtesy hand sanitizer at check stands and the pharmacy counter; plexiglass panels installed at check stands; and social distancing signage at entrances, on the floor, and worn by employees.

"The health and safety of everyone who walks through our doors is a top priority," said Sharp. "First and foremost, our thoughts are with the team member who tested positive and we hope for a full recovery."
