Mark Adams Reportedly Makes His First Move To Fill New Staff

Mark Adams being hired by Texas Tech as the new Men's Basketball coach brought the immediate news that both Kyler Edwards and Kevin McCullar would return to the Red Raiders after previously being undecided. Edwards was brought back all the way from the mysterious transfer portal.

After the initial buzz of the Adams hire wears off, until the free buzz from Two Docs wears off that is, the new head coach will have to complete an entire staff and recruit the rest of his roster to stay while adding other pieces from the JUCO ranks or the aforementioned transfer portal.

Reportedly, that first domino has fallen with Mark Adams getting Portland State head coach Barret Perry to come to Lubbock and bring his fast-paced offense with him. The hiring was first reported by Jeff Goodman of Stadium.

Ryan "Money" Mainville was quick to point out online that Peery's offense is unlike what's been trotted out by the Red Raiders in the past five seasons. While Beard's "motion" offense is mostly half-court sets trying to find slashers creating open looks, Peery was a fast-paced volume shooting mind that pairs with a vaunted full-court press defense.

West Virginia has moved past it in recent seasons, but the height of Press Virginia was a sight to behold and that style could be headed to the Hub City with Peery.

Mainville juxtaposed the Beard Era offenses against Portland State's and the difference was staggering. While looking at the stats below remember there are just over 300 teams in division one basketball. Three more shots per game last season might not seem like a big number, but how man one-possession games might that have affected?

Peery has a combined head coaching record of 241-87 across various levels of college basketball and has also been a Power 5 assistant with a short stretch at Arizona State. The Portland State bio on Peery reads, "The exciting, up-tempo, full-court pressure game that Peery promised has now thrilled Viking fans for three seasons. The passion of his players and team is engaging." That sounds like it will play in the Big 12.

The staff now stands at Adams and Peery, head coach and associate head coach respectively. For what it's worth, Sean Sutton is still listed on the roster as "Advisor and Head of Player Development".
