The capital murder trial for a 24-year-old man accused of murder has finally received a court date after five years.

On Monday, October 10, procedural matters for the trial of Hollis Daniels will begin, followed by jury selection, which could take weeks due to the nature of the case.

KAMC news reported that State Judge John McClendon III will have to determine if the trial is even able to continue in Lubbock or if changes will have to be made.

Back in 2017, Hollis Daniels was 19 years old when he was arrested by Texas Tech University Police Officer Floyd East Jr. Daniels is accused of using a concealed stolen gun in his possession to shoot and kill Officer East inside the Texas Tech Police Department. Daniels fled from the scene of the shooting and was captured about an hour and half after the incident near the City Bank Coliseum. Daniels was arrested and officers found a .45 caliber pistol, along with a body camera used by on-duty police officers.

According to court documents, Daniels was interviewed and stated to have confessed to shooting Officer East.

This past September, Daniels’ defense team tried to get the court to suppress that interview done by the Lubbock Police Department by a judge. The judge instead ruled in favor of prosecutors to keep the interview. Prosecutors are looking to get the death penalty in this case.
