The driver that was involved in a fatal car crash on Saturday, January 16th has admitted that he had been drinking at a local bar before the crash happened.

KAMC News reports that the crash happened at roughly 2:15 a.m. near University Avenue and Marsha Sharp Freeway.

30-year-old Gabriel Zerrata was heading northbound on University Avenue when an officer witnessed him collide with a passenger car going eastbound on Marsha Sharp. It wasn't said if the collision was due to someone running a red light, failure to yield the right of way, or any other reason.

The driver of the passenger car was 19-year-old Jessica Helmers, and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

Zerrata, however, was transported to University Medical Center with only moderate injuries, according to a report by local police.

Zerrata told the officer who witnessed the crash at the scene, that he was at a local bar beforehand and had "shots of alcoholic beverages." A blood sample was taken from Zerrata following the crash, but the results of which haven't been given out.

As of Monday, January 18th, no charges had been filed in the case, as the Lubbock Police Department have said that the investigation was still ongoing.
