LCISD Confiscates Brightly-Colored Toy Gun From Middle School Student
Lubbock-Cooper ISD released a statement to parents on Monday, April 25th after a toy gun was brought to school.
A teacher at Laura Bush Middle School had become aware of a toy gun brought by a student, so the gun was immediately confiscated and campus administrators began their investigation.
They said that the toy gun in question featured a brightly-colored attachment to hold water beads and was not altered in any way to make it look like a real firearm. They also said that the student never brandished the toy gun in a threatening manner or attempted to convince anyone else that it was real.
While the toy was not a firearm, did not appear to be a real firearm and no students or staff were threatened or endangered at any point, the incident still fell under Lubbock-Cooper ISD's weapon-related offenses. The LCISD Student Code of Conduct says that students shall not possess "a 'look-alike' weapon that is intended to be used as a weapon or could reasonably be perceived as a weapon."
No details on any resulting disciplinary action could be shared due to confidentiality laws. The district ended their statement by saying that "safety remains the utmost priority of Lubbock-Cooper ISD."
