Last week, the Kansas City Chiefs agreed to an extension with Patrick Mahomes to make him the highest-paid player in the NFL. Now, the Chiefs have locked up the cornerstone of their defense Chris Jones. This is a massive deal at the deadline for the Chiefs, especially since Chris Jones had said he wouldn't play without a new contract.

According to ESPN's Adam Schefter, Jones contract is a 4-year deal worth up to $85 million with $60 of that guaranteed and a signing bonus of $37 million.

The deal surprised a large number of people who thought the Chiefs would have the cap space to sign both Mahomes and Jones in the same offseason. Obviously, Mahomes was going to be signed and is incredibly important, but the Chiefs wouldn't have won the Super Bowl without Jones on the defensive line batting down a late pass from Jimmy G.

Jones was also a huge part of the resurgence on defense in 2019 for the Chiefs who were rebuilt after a lackluster 2018 on the defensive side. Jones has 33 sacks four years into his career in the NFL with 9 of those coming in 13 games last season.

It's not only Jones and Mahomes that have been resigned by the Chiefs. Key contributors Sammy Watkins, Bashaud Breeland and Demarcus Robinson were all resigned or extended.

The Chiefs will now bring back pretty much every starter but the punter from the 2019-20 season.
