Lubbock Bracing For Extremely Cold Wind Chills Beginning Sunday
It's almost time to break out the jackets, firewood, and make sure your pets have a warm place to take shelter. Bitterly cold weather is headed our way and will impact much of Texas. The good news? The cold snap will be short lived and nothing like what we saw in 2021.
Arctic air is expected to start flowing into our area as soon as Saturday night. As of Thursday morning, the National Weather Service is forecasting temperatures to be below freezing Sunday through Tuesday morning. Record low temperatures could occur early Monday according to KAMC.
In Lubbock, the low on Monday is forecasted to be around 6 degrees with a windchill of -11 degrees. In Plainview Monday, the low will be 1 degree with a windchill of -18 degrees according to the National Weather Service.
These are bitterly cold temperatures and will be cold enough to freeze pipes and to kill outdoor pets. Lubbock pet owners should bring pets inside during the cold snap or at least provide shelter and warmth for their animals. It is illegal for pet owners to have animals tied up outdoors when temperatures are below 30 degrees.
For those worried about power and the ERCOT grid. ERCOT has been monitoring this winter storm and arctic air. While it will be cold in Texas, this arctic cold front doesn't compare to what we saw in 2021 when much of the state was below freezing for 8 days. Freezing rain also lead to downed power lines, tree branches, and chaos. That isn't expected with this front.
