There are also cameras for the home that have two-way communication. Things are a lot easier than when we were growing up, and we were just left to fend for ourselves home alone.
So if you are toying with the idea, test it out. Leave them home alone for a quick trip to the grocery store. Have a nice dinner out and leave them home to see how they will do. If they pass the test and demonstrate real maturity, you can feel confident in your decision without worrying about outside interference.
You know your kid and whether they are mature enough to handle being home alone. If they can't and something happens, then it can fall back on you. If they are mature enough to come home and work on their homework, then you are already a step ahead when you get home from work.
