A Texas grocery store just officially beat the world record for the largest fruit display: with avocados. Yes, avocados are a fruit. A fruit you make delicious, delicious guacamole with.

El Rio Grande Latin Market in Dallas, Texas beat the record with 86,764 pounds/ 260,292 avocados. The record break was followed by a 5/ $1 sale of which I am very envious. I just paid $2.50 for one in a different part of Texas.

The massive display just bested a 2022 record which was held by 77,000 pounds of Del Monte bananas in Westmont, Illinois.

The store also had giveaways, mariachi bands, DJs, and more to celebrate the record break. A representative said it was about more than just having the biggest display, it was about promoting access to nutritious food for underserved communities.

Many areas of Texas are considered "food deserts," which means they lack reasonable access to healthy foods. Think of a small town that only has a small store with "dollar" in the name- most of the food is highly processed. These folks likely have to make a big trip to access produce. That can be true for neighborhoods in large urban areas, too.

As for avocados, they are hard to beat, nutrition-wise. Avocados are a good source of fiber, several different vitamins and minerals, and healthy fats. Avocados are considered a "heart-healthy" food and can help lower cholesterol.
