Frenship ISD Student Heads to Scripps National Spelling Bee for the 3rd Time
Matthew Noel, an 8th grader at Frenship ISD, is heading to the Scripps National Spelling Bee for his 3rd year.
A Frenship ISD release said that Noel earned a spot at nationals after he took 1st place at the United Supermarkets Regional Spelling Bee on Saturday, March 27th.
Noel took 1st place at the Lubbock Regional Spelling Bee in 2018, which allowed him to make his first appearance at the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Then, in 2019, he went for the 2nd time. Both the regional spelling bees were cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Noel and his family feared this year's regional bee would be cancelled again due to a lack of sponsorships. Plus, as an 8th grader, this would have been his last eligible year to compete, so Noel's family was ecstatic to hear of the local community banding together to save the Lubbock Regional Spelling Bee.
Dr. Michael Noel, Matthew's father, said:
He put in hundreds and hundreds of hours to get to the national bee for a 3rd time last year, only for it to be cancelled. He has put in twice as much effort and twice as much work for this year.
Matthew said:
I'm so excited to represent Frenship Middle School, Frenship ISD, and the City of Lubbock. I'll do my best to make everyone proud!
