First CDs, Now Mobile Stores — Best Buy Closing All Small Mobile Locations
First, Best Buy decided CDs are dead, and now the company has decided smaller-format mobile stores in malls should die as well.
According to the Minneapolis Star Tribune, Best Buy will be closing all 250 of their smaller mobile stores.
From The Star Tribune:
Best Buy plans to close all of its 250 small-format mobile phone stores in the U.S. by the end of May.
The stores — most of which are in shopping malls, and at 1,400 square feet are much smaller than Best Buy's 40,000-square-foot big-box stores — have become less profitable for the Richfield-based electronics chain.
Best Buy CEO Hubert Joly notified employees Wednesday of the closings, saying it is part of a strategy of "continuous optimization."
I have called the location in the South Plains Mall and no one would speak to me regarding the closing, instead referring me to their corporate office.
Best Buy expects all 250 mobile store locations to be closed by the end of May.
It was fun while it lasted. Let's just hope the South Plains Mall can fill that space quickly.
