The protests over his death also speak to years of systemic racism, well-documented prior instances of police brutality going back decades, and repeated calls for action falling on deaf ears of elected officials.
The event was organized by The 100 Black Men of West Texas. Lubbock Lubbock Mayor Dan Pope and Police Chief Floyd Mitchell were among those who spoke to the crowd, with Mayor Pope speaking about a message of unity and peaceful protests.
The flyover was certainly special because of the purpose for which it was done and may have appeared to be similar to previous flyovers of Lubbock. However, this flyover was extra special because of the squadron that was in the air and a connection the squadron has with Lubbock.
