Things got a little crazy on the "Today" show yesterday, when some nutjob slashed his wrists during a live outdoor segment.

The man is a 76-year-old named Park Chong Mar .and he slashed both his wrists and his forearms after shouting things about government corruption, the IRS, not being "a freeloader," and, quote, "peppermint tea."  The "Today" show cameras didn't actually catch him doing it . but several people in the crowd captured photos and video.  The man was taken to the hospital, where he's in stable condition.  Fortunately, no one else was hurt.

He later told the "New York Daily News", quote,

"I had to do something desperate to fight the corruption, fight the IRS.  They are so powerful . need people to help me fight for justice.

"If I don't do something drastic, sooner or later these guys are going to kill me anyway.  I couldn't even pay rent this month."

He claimed he made a lot of money buying stocks over the years, only to be stripped of everything.  He says, quote, "I should be living well.  I had over a million dollars before.  They're making my life miserable."

By the way, the man also has three fingers missing from his left hand, but that's from a previous maniacal freak-out. According to reports, he cut the fingers off with a meat cleaver during some festival in New York back in 1995, and tossed them into the crowd.  When the "Daily News" asked him about that, he said it was, quote, "a long story."

After the commotion, the "Today" show moved back into the studio and Matt and Laura addressed the situation on the air.  He said, quote,

"A short time ago, a man out there attempted to harm himself with a knife.

"He did manage to cut himself.  He was, um, controlled by our security team . . . he's now being attended to by medical personnel . . .

"We understand the individual did say something about not wanting to harm others, but wanting to cause harm to himself.  It's under control now."
