‘47 Meters Down’ Trailer: The Trapped-With-Sharks Genre Strikes Again
From the genre that brought you Jaws and Open Water comes 47 Meters Down. Sharks! They’re really mean and nasty!
Just when you thought it was safe to stop quoting the tagline of Jaws 2, here comes 47 Meters Down, starring Mandy Moore and Claire Holt in a survival horror flick about a pair of young women stranded at the bottom of the ocean (I’m not sure far down it is, maybe like 3,000 feet?) and surrounded by deadly flesh-eaters. Soon they are swimming with sharks, and not the hilariously angry Kevin Spacey-type. Will they survive? Will the sharks eat them? I don’t know, that’s why you gotta pay to see the movie, man.
Here is the official plot synopsis. It’s very complex, so you may have to read it several times:
Lisa (Mandy Moore) and Kate (Claire Holt) catch a once in a lifetime, face-to-face look at majestic Great Whites. But when their worst fears are realized and the cage breaks away from their boat, they find themselves plummeting to the bottom of the seabed.
We have seen this basic scenario before (most recently in The Shallows, just last year) but it’s usually a reliable one for terror. It gives sharks a bad name (they really need to hire a better PR firm; there are serial killers with better reputations than sharks), but they also tend to strike at our hearts and minds with pure, ferocious terror of the unknown and the brutal realities of nature at its most Darwinian.
47 Meters Down opens in theaters on June 16. I am looking forward to it.
