Halloween is a few days away and while I still haven’t picked a costume, I did find the time to compile some of the scariest music videos of all time in order to help inspire you. Please do not read on if you’re easily susceptible to nightmares.

. Thirty Seconds To Mars “The Kill (Bury Me)”

Thirty Seconds To Mars’ “The Kill (Bury Me)” is less of a music video then it is a mini horror movie that sees the band checking into a creepy hotel and the terrifying hijinks that ensue.

Michael Jackson “Thriller”

At this point it’s a national consensus that Michael Jackson’s 14-minute clip for “Thriller” is the most influential pop video of all-time, but what’s sometimes overlooked is how scary it is. From the costumes to the choreography this update of Night Of The Living Dead looks as innovative today as it did when it was originally released back in 1983.

8

Rob Zombie “Dragula”

When you’re name is Rob Zombie every day is Halloween, however we’re betting Zombie freaked out even himself during this homage to classic low-budget horror flicks. If driving a jalopy through the bowels of hell isn’t evil enough for you, I suggest seeking counseling immediately.

7

Marilyn Manson “Sweet Dreams (Are Made Of These)”

A list of the creepiest videos wouldn’t be complete without featuring Marilyn Manson—and he’s at his most sinister during his cover of this Eurythmics classic. Admittedly I'm not exactly sure I understand the narrative of this video, but seeing the image of Manson in those huge stilts still gives us nightmares.

6

Tool "Sober"

One of the benefits of stop-motion animation is that it makes images just off-kilter enough to contribute added extra creepiness to the end result and no video expresses that more clearly than Tool’s classic video for “Sober.” Oh and don’t get me started on that meat tunnel that occurs near the end of the video.

Michael Jackson's "Ghosts""

Michael Jackson's Ghosts is a short film starring Michael Jackson, co-written by horror novelist Stephen King and directed by film director and special effects guru Stan Winston which could also be classified as a long-form music video. It was filmed and first screened in 1996 and released along with select prints of the film Stephen King's Thinner. It was released a year later internationally on VHS and Video CD.

4

Nine Inch Nails “Closer”

It’s no secret that Trent Reznor is as fan of disturbing imagery and his video for “Closer” is probably his creepiest collection yet. Featuring insects, animal skulls and crucified chimpanzees, this video will inevitably make the viewer incredibly uncomfortable… and knowing Reznor, that’s kind of the point.

3

Mastodon “Curl Of The Burl”

Videos aside, I wouldn’t want to run into the members Mastodon in a dark alley. That said, I’ll admit it’s infinitely scarier to see this video, which is like a bad drug experience come to life.

2

Queens Of The Stone Age “Burn The Witch”

As you’ve probably already gathered any video that features little kids is infinitely more terrifying than one featuring adults and this video, which also features the devil and is set in quasi-Medieval times, is a perfect example of why. Oh and also there are skeletons here, too; don’t say we didn’t warn you.

1

Kid Cudi “No One Believes Me”

Unlike, say Marilyn Manson or Trent Reznor, Kid Cudi isn’t known for his love of the dark arts, however that’s exactly what makes his video for “No One Believes Me” so scary.
