Life is about staying connected with those you love, so if you're separated from your family and friends here in Lubbock...what to do? Many of us, especially students, find ourselves lonely during the holidays and a virtual visit just may be the answer. Thanks to Skype, it's cheap and much more gratifying than a phone call or email.

Being away from my family is not new, as we are spread all over the country, as are my friends. So, I spend a lot of time setting up "chat dates". I have been able to watch my 12 year old niece in Phoenix practice for her piano recital, my sister in Ohio study for her exams and my friends in Dubai go shopping in the Gold Souk.

I am a huge fan of social media, Facebook keeps me up to date on what my friends are doing and allows for a quick, "like" if nothing more than my way of saying, "Hey, I'm checking in". Of course some might find it an impersonal way of connecting, but with so much time spent working and getting ready for the holidays, it's okay for now.

Of course, Skype does have it's drawbacks, especially when it's someone you're dating long distance. It requires a quick glance in the mirror and perhaps the words, "Babe, give me a few minutes..." as I run a brush through my hair, put on some make-up and change into something more...
