Following an on-set accident in which Maze Runner star Dylan O’Brien sustained serious injuries, the future of the next installment in the franchise has been left a little unclear. Production was recently suspended indefinitely on The Death Cure as the actor required more time to recover than previously assumed, leading to an extended delay that would make reassembling the entire cast and crew fairly difficult. But it looks as though the sequel will eventually come together after all — though not as quickly as some fans had hoped.

Variety reports that the release of Maze Runner: The Death Cure has been delayed by almost a full year, moving from February 17, 2017 to January 12, 2018. Production was originally set to resume this month, but was ultimately shut down entirely when O’Brien required additional recovery time. Although the hiatus was initially announced as an indefinite one, it would appear that Fox and director Wes Ball (who previously helmed The Scorch Trials) now have a solid timeline in place for production to recommence.

A January date for a YA franchise sequel isn’t great, but depending on the actual production schedule and O’Brien’s return, that date could very well change to something a little more accommodating.

The Death Cure faces an additional conflict, as O’Brien is in talks to star in American Assassin, a new thriller based on the Vince Flynn novel of the same name. Michael Keaton is set to co-star in the new film from Kill the Messenger director Michael Cuesta, with CBS Films eyeing the project as a potential franchise starter. American Assassin begins filming this summer, which could be partially responsible for The Death Cure’s extended delay.
