A Small Issue at Movie Theaters Is Becoming a Major Problem

Going to the movies in 2016 can be a frustrating situation. People texting on their phones. Exorbitant ticket prices. People talking on their phones. Sound that’s either way too loud or way too soft. People taking pictures of the screen with their phones and then posting them to Facebook in the middle of the movie. For a lot of these problems, there’s no easy solution. An experience designed to take us away from our everyday troubles is now fraught with them.

‘The Girl With All the Gifts’ Review: The Next Great Zombie Movie Has Arrived

The girl looks harmless. She has kind eyes and a sweet smile. She speaks politely to the armed guards who come to retrieve her from her prison cell. She’s the start student in her class. But there must be a reason she’s always shackled or a wheelchair, and the prison guards keep assault rifles trained on her at all times.

2016 Was the Worst Summer for Big Movies in 15 Years – But That’s Not the Whole Story

About two months ago, on a day when I was in no way questioning my career path and life choices, I asked a question: “Is 2016 the worst summer movie season ever?” In early July, it was probably a little premature to raise that issue, but with theaters were filled with dreck like Independence Day: Resurgence, The Legend of Tarzan, and Alice Through the Looking Glass, it was hard not to wonder. At that time, I looked at the Rotten Tomatoes ratings from hundreds of wide releases from the last decade, and found that while the overall scores from 2016 were basically in line with those from ones from each of the last five years, the scores for just the biggest movies, the ones like Tarzan or Independence Day with budgets in excess of $100 million, were way lower this year.

‘Rings’ Trailer: An Analog Horror Classic Gets a Digital Upgrade

It’s been over a decade since the last film in The Ring saga, 2005’s poorly received The Ring Two. The franchise, about a deadly VHS tape with strange, surreal contents and the long-haired ghost tied to it, has been dormant ever since, but you know how it is; these types of hauntings (particularly ones that have been quite lucrative for a film studio in the past) never stay dead for long. The Ring makes a serious comeback this fall. The main ghost from the series co-stars in a crossover horror film with the ghost from The Grudge called Sadako vs. Kayako, which plays at the Toronto Film Festival next month. And the American Ring franchise is back up and running too with Rings from director F. Javier Gutierrez (Before the Fall).

Federal Judge Orders ‘Making a Murderer’ Subject Released From Prison

Netflix has already announced a second season of Making a Murderer, their surprise hit true-crime series that captured the nation’s imagination last winter. The streaming service confirmed last month that filmmakers Laura Ricciardi and Moira Demos were already at work on a second batch of episodes “centering on new developments in the [Steven] Avery and [Brendan] Dassey cases. If that’s true, their show just got a huge real-life plot twist.

Jared Leto on ‘Suicide Squad’ Joker Deleted Scenes: ‘Were There Any That Didn’t Get Cut?’

Jared Leto is the second name on the poster for Suicide Squad. The only actor to get billed above him is Will Smith. Leto is listed ahead of actors like Margot Robbie, Joel Kinnaman, and Viola Davis, who, unlike the Joker, are all actual members of the Suicide Squad. Despite Leto’s billing, though, and despite the large amount of publicity surrounding his unusual version of the character (not to mention his unusual preparations to play the role, which included sending disgusting “gifts” to his colleagues), Leto has very little screentime in the final film. He’s featured mostly in flashbacks about Robbie’s Harley Quinn and her time before she was captured by Batman. When he finally appears in the contemporary story, he shows up to “rescue” Harley, fails, and crashes in a helicopter. Then he doesn’t show up again until the very last scenes of the movie, when he tries to break her out of prison.

New ‘Spider-Man: Homecoming’ Set Photos Hit the Web

I’m the guy who wrote the article “What Marvel Got Right About Spider-Man That His Solo Movies Got Wrong,” so it should go without saying (or at least saying again) how much I enjoyed Tom Holland’s new take on Spidey from Captain America: Civil War. The real test for the new Spider-Man, though, will be his first full-fledged solo film, Spider-Man: Homecoming, due next summer from Marvel and Sony. Will Homecoming carry forward Spidey’s momentum from Civil War? Or will it be another Amazing Spider-Man 2? (Dear Lord, please don’t let it be another Amazing Spider-Man 2.)
