You don't have to be a stop action animator, a 13 year old, or a stoner to love the funniest channel on television. For years Cartoon Network's adult swim has broken the mold on what is funny and pushed the limits of what is allowed. They are defining for a whole demographic what comedy is.

It is this theater of the absurd mentality that has led to some of the best comedy on television gathering under one late night roof. So sure, if you're baked, the following shows are defiantly going to appeal to you, but there might also be something in it for those of us who are just tired of the same old boring crap.

THE TOP FIVE...NO SIX SHOWS ON ADULT SWIM:

6. Moral Orel: This claymation show is based off of a childhood Christian program called "Davey and Goliath." Like Davey, Moral has his own pet dog and the two of them go through the world dealing with hard ethical dilemmas from the standpoint of what Jesus would do. Unlike Davey, the clay world Orel finds himself in is not a sugar coated clay dreamland, but rather a bitingly satiric look at average America. On the surface it appears to be taking shots at Evangelical Christianity, but really it's a healthy turn at all of us. Politically incorrect in every way, every adult in the town is a "moral" disaster. You wont like this show if you can't laugh at yourself, because everything you believe in will likely be torn apart and ridiculed.

5. Metalocalypse: The plot is kind of complicated, and if you don't like seeing cartoon people being dismembered or melted you may want to look away, but Metalocalypse is so raw you will find yourself laughing over and over (even if you feel ashamed when it's ended.) The heavy metal band that stars in the show is helplessly powerful and rich, singing songs of doom and destruction, but its members simply cannot take care of themselves. They are always completely unaware of the havoc that follows them, and they are so uniquely soft and tame, that it makes the ruin they scatter all the funnier. Throw in a subplot of the government being out to eradicate them, and you have fifteen unsettling minutes of comedic disturbia.

4. Lucy Daughter of the Devil: The devil is in his mid-forties and somewhat pathetic, his daughter is hard to tame, Jesus is an extremely popular disc jockey/ street magician, and a group of priests and nuns are ridiculously evil. Again, much like Moral Orel and Metalocalypse, anyone highly religious could be offended, but this show follows the same basic principal- mock those in power, and mock that which scares us. The devil is often trying to destroy Jesus, but gets helplessly sidetracked (and Jesus is found dating his daughter from time to time). One watch of the episode where Satan opens up a chain of Mexican karaoke restaurants called Tequila Sally's (Jesus is hired to run Karaoke Tuesdays) will leave you hooked.

3. Family Guy: Back in the day, after Fox had cancelled the series and before DVD sales had resurrected it, the folks over at Adult Swim saw its comedic genius and snatched up the syndicated re-runs. Now, it is a cornerstone of the Adult Swim comedy line up. Catch both old and relatively new (one-three week old) episodes all week long. The only reason this show isn't higher on this list is because the premier episodes are still found only on fox.

2. Tim and Eric's Awesome Show: Great Job! : Tim and Eric, formally creators of the Adult Swim hit, "Tom Goes to the Mayor," have found comedic gold within this fifteen minute green screened variety show. A combination of wacky music videos, self help seminar tapes, and inane commercials all linked by a weak theme such as "Dads," or "Cats," trigger some deep buried part of the psyche probably better left untapped. Rhythmic beats and bizarre special effects are probably geared at the sleep deprived or the altered state of mind, but can still be appreciated by anyone who can't laugh unless caught off guard. One of the greatest treats of Tim and Eric are the celebrity comedian cameos where the likes of Jeff Goldblum, David Cross, or John C Reilly (to name a few), play pathetically bizarre characters with the commitment of Shakespearean actors. Reilly's "Dr. Steve Brule," is probably the funniest character anywhere on television. Do yourself a favor and be one of the select few who get to enjoy this off the wall sense of humor.

1. Aqua Teen Hunger Force: Possibly Adult Swim's most famous original program, this fifteen-minute show about a meatball, shake, and flying fry creature embodies everything Adult Swim stands for. At times disturbing and at others ridiculously outlandish, ATHF commits to scenarios and side characters as unlikely as its hero's all to the backdrop of a pathetic New Jersey suburb. Their neighbor, Carl, is the perfect stereotype, and often the only human on the show he gives a dark look at the lazy bastard that lies within. It's probably most notorious for the Boston bomb threat that was accidentally instigated when they were trying to promote their new movie. That is the ATHF style of comedy in a nutshell: they're dangerous, and somebody always comes out looking stupid.
