Texas Tech Puts the Longhorns Upside Down in Lubbock

A sellout crowd was on hand for Texas Tech and Texas in Lubbock for what could be the final matchup between the pair in Lubbock for the foreseeable future.

The offense started hot for the Longhorns, who had a three-play 63-yard drive for a touchdown to open the game. QB Hudson Card connected with Keilan Robinson to open the scoring. Texas Tech would respond with a touchdown, but not nearly as quickly as Texas. Red Raiders QB Donovan Smith would finish off an 80-plus yard drive on the 10th offensive play of the game with a 4-yard touchdown run.

A field goal on Texas' next possession would open the door for Texas Tech to take their first lead of the game, which they would do with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Smith to Tahj Brooks.

After taking the lead 14-10, Texas Tech would snag an interception when Reggie Pearson jumped a long pass from Card. A three and out would waste the opportunity for the Red Raiders, and a short punt would give the Longhorns 69-yards to go for a score. They'd do just that with a Xavier Worthy touchdown reception from 38 yards out to finish the drive in six plays.

Another three and out from Texas Tech would lead to a brutal sequence from Texas Tech's defense. With 4:32 remaining in the first half, Texas would take 12-plays to crawl 82 yards for another touchdown. A Bijan Robinson 8-yard rush would give Texas a 24-14 lead to take into the 2nd half.

To open the second, Texas Tech would turn it over on downs in at their own 39, but force a four and out on the next possession to take it right back. A field goal drive would make it 24-17.

The Red Raiders and Longhorns would then trade touchdowns, making it 31-24 early in the 4th quarter. Texas Tech would fail on a 4th and goal conversion, but force a punt to get the ball right back with just under 10 minutes left in the game. The punt return from Myles Price would put Texas Tech at the Longhorns' 30 yard line.

One minute and 30 seconds later, Baylor Cupp would catch a pass from Smith from 19-yards out to tie the game at 31 a piece with just inside 8 minutes left in the game.

Texas Head Coach Steve Sarkisian's offense would stall, and the Longhorns would punt it to the Red Raiders with 5:36 left in the game. Texas Tech would start a drive and need a 4th down conversion from the 50 to stay alive. Smith would scramble and find Price for six yards. They needed three.

A few plays later, defensive holding extended the drive again for the Red Raiders with 1:19 left in the game.

A tunnel screen would gain a few yards on first down, making it 2nd and 7.

The Longhorns would take a timeout with 1:15 left on the clock. You could feel the drama and tension in The Jones as the sellout crowd waited for something big to happen.

A run up the middle would force the Longhorns' 3rd and final timeout, but set up a 3rd and 7 for the Red Raiders. Texas Tech was fine with setting up a field goal with 25 seconds left.

Unfortunately, the Longhorns would respond in 4 plays and 21 seconds to tie the game with a field goal of their own.

Another overtime game in Lubbock.

Texas Tech would win the coin toss in overtime and elect to play defense. On the opening play, Texas' Bijan Robinson fumbled and it was recovered by Texas Tech's Reggie Pearson.

Texas Tech would take over and run the ball three straight times with SaRodorick Thompson to get to the 3-yard line. A run from Smith would set up a 4th and goal from the 2 yard line.

Wolff would be set up with a 20-yard kick from the left hash -- a bad angle. With all the pressure in the world bearing down on Wolff, he stepped up and won the game.

Final score: Texas Tech wins, 37-34.
